Later that night, when the men were alone in Ford’s room, he said, “How much of what the old man said do you believe?”

Neuland said, “I believe there’s something dangerous in Pale House. But not much beyond that.”

“What about the family curse nonsense?”

“Not a word of that. Whatever the devil is, Mansfield or someone else in the family called it up.”

Ford said, “Yeah, but how? Do you think these clowns are capable of calling up a real demon?”

“Probably not on purpose. It might be as simple as a fuckup at a ritual.”

“Idiots playing with what they don’t understand.”

“Or maybe they raised it, then tried to get rid of it, and it decided it didn’t want to go.”

“If that’s true, Mansfield will never admit it.”

“That’s what bothers me,” said Neuland. “Not that he might have lied to us, but knowing he’s holding something back.”

Ford frowned. “There’s a lot of that going around these days.”

“Tell me about it. After this, no more weirdo jobs. Just clients who point out the target and say, ‘Sic ’em.’”

“A little simplicity would be nice.”

Neuland said, “I don’t trust anything about this place or that old man. I’ll keep an eye on things while you sleep.”

“Like hell you will. We do this by the book. I’ll do two hours and come and knock on your door. Anything tries to get in but me, kill it.”

“Amen to that.”
