139 Overseers Reports 1774–1777, Allston Family Papers, SCHS. In 1771, he worked as an overseer for £200 South Carolina currency per annum. He also “had three negroes upon shares.” He received the same salary the following year but “worked four negores on shares” at the plantation where he was overseer. He received a further “two [shares] over the river,” presumably on another plantation that was owned by his employer. When he left his employer, John Gaillard, in April 1773, he noted that he had “five negroes on shares.” However, at this point, he did not leave overseeing. On 1 February 1775, he signed another agreement to work as an overseer for Peter Manion and the following week “moved my family” to Manion’s plantation. Again, as an artisan and slave-owner, he received multiple forms of payment for his role as overseer. He was to be paid “two hundred pounds Currency per year” and he was “to have an Equal share for four Negroes of all produce sent to market or Sold off the plantation.” Furthermore, his employer agreed that his “family” both “Black & white” would be permitted “to eat of all the produce of the Plantn…”
