CONSIDER THIS . . . A family once went to the state fair in the middle of the summer. There were lots of rides, and there was lots of noise. People shouted out at passersby, asking them to buy hats, balloons, jewelry. There were hundreds of smells in the air: corn dogs and deep-fried pickles and scones with strawberry jam. Sounds and sights and tastes and smells were everywhere. By the end of the day, sore feet were everywhere too.

So the family sat on a nearby bench. As they did, the girl looked up into a tree. Tucked way back in the branches—behind an escaped balloon—was a small nest. In that nest was a mother bird and her baby birds. For just a minute the bird caught the girl’s eye, and they stared at each other. Then the mother went back to feeding her babies, who snuggled into their nest. Although there had been lots of excitement during the day, the touching moment between the baby birds and their mother was the one the girl loved most.

Often in our daily lives, the bright sights, strong smells, loud noise, and constant activity keep our minds and bodies hopping. There is so much to take in that we miss the things that might come to us if we set aside a quiet moment. God sometimes gets our attention in a big way. But mostly, he comes to us and shares his Word, his heart, and his direction when we take time to sit down and be quiet. Even Jesus himself chose to withdraw to quiet places, often, to meet with his Father.

Lay the distractions aside for just a minute and close your eyes. What do you hear? Sense? See?
