UNCANNY & UNNATURAL

“And you’re sure something interesting happened? Something… supernatural?” Mr. Zultano’s voice was loud and his eyes grew wide, making him look like a bug. Thankfully, he remained in his car.

Jacob, Emily, Zach and I had walked quite a way down the road and away from school in the hopes no one would see Mr. Zultano or his car. But it was the end of the day, and several students passed by and a couple of them laughed as they glanced from us to the car. It stood out like a sore thumb with the weird gadgets mounted on its battered, dusty fenders.

My face grew hot with embarrassment as a girl from the grade above ours pointed us out to her friends. Their cackles of laughter seemed uncommonly loud.

“That’s what we heard,” Zach said. “Something happened by Deception Pass bridge. What if it’s the Mothman!”

It wasn't totally honest, and none of us felt good about it. But we couldn’t tell Mr. Zultano outright about the vampires or Brin. And something paranormal was happening there. And he was always staking places out to get footage for his video channel. Maybe this time he'd get something on camera? Although I hoped not. I hoped the vampires would be asleep…

“I haven’t heard about any Mothman sightings,” Madison said.

“Yeah, me neither.” Mr. Zultano tapped his phone screen. “I’ve got alerts set for anything uncanny or unnatural on the island. And right now there’s zilch.”

“I can only tell you what we heard,” Jacob said. He sounded pretty convincing. “And there’s definitely something uncanny and unnatural happening at Deception Pass. We thought you’d want to take a look, so we came to you first.”

“Okay. You up for a trip to the north end, Mads?” Mr. Zultano asked Madison.

“I suppose,” she said. “And you need fresh content for your channel. You lose a ton of subscribers when you show that old footage. People totally freak out in the comments. They’re sick of recaps of The Episode of the Unexpected Wig!”

“It’s the only thing I’ve got to post right now, at least until I can restore my drives!” Mr. Zultano glanced at me and the others. “Okay, hop aboard The Interceptor.”

“The what?” Zach asked.

“My car. It’s what I call her. Queen Edith the Slayer. Or The Interceptor for short.”

“Interceptor of what?” Jacob asked.

“Of the forces of darkness, of course!” Mr. Zultano said.

“Sure.” I climbed into the back so I could duck out of sight of the kids still leaving school. A moment later, the others joined me.

We headed up to Deception Pass, which took an hour and a half or so. Thankfully, we’d managed to square this with our parents by saying we were going to the nature trails there in the park. It was true. We even told them we’d be on the look out for vampires, and it wasn't our fault if they didn’t believe us.

As we neared Oak Harbor, a thrumming din came from behind us. I turned to find Brin following on his motorcycle.
