MELINOË

Iglide my fingers along the surface of the milky bathwater. The bubbles are long gone, and so is the warmth. The room is silent save for the small plunking noise the drops make when they fall from the tap. In my head, Helios repeats those treacherous three words, the eight letters of doom. He left hours ago, yet the apartment still feels thick with it.

I hear a knock at the door, and I know it’s him, though something sounds off. There is the absence of his usual arrogance. The undertone of “I’m here, pay attention to me”. But I still don’t move, not ready to leave the serenity of my bath. I lift my hand, tilting my head as I watch the water droplets fall from my fingers, rippling the otherwise still water before merging with the larger body.

As my eyes wander, trailing along the cream porcelain of the tub, my mind drifts back. I usually don’t let myself dwell, but in this moment, my past seems safer than my future. I take a deep breath, hold the air in my lungs, and slide down the back of the tub, fully submerging myself.
