Billy Worthington gripped the wooden handle of the slingshot in his left hand. Taking the chewed piece of gum from his mouth, he slid the sticky cherry-scented mound into the sling. Billy held a deep breath to steady his aim. Target verified in 3-2-what?

With his concentration broke, he peeked over the hedge to find Sophie Mae intercepting his target. He jumped over the fire bushes that edged the walkway. “Did you say the carnival was in town?”

Dink raised her left hand and confiscated his slingshot. “She was talking to me. Mind your own business.”

“Hey! Give that back.”

“No way. You were gonna shoot me. You’re lucky I don’t tell Mom. I bet she’d like to know that you took it from her closet.”

“Well, I know Mom doesn’t want you to leave the house, and you’ll never step foot near the carnival.”

Dink glared at the boy and turned to Sophie Mae. “He’s right. Mom will never let me leave, thanks to Billy and his knack for trouble.”

“I can get her approval, but it’ll cost you.” Billy crossed his arms and grinned. Dink knew the boy was a master at manipulation due to being the baby of the family.

“What do you want, dumb brother?”

“I want to go with you, and you can’t ignore me or lose me in the haunted house like last time. I need Sophie Mae to help me win a prize.”

“Is that okay with you?” she asked Sophie Mae, who nodded.

“Fine,” Dink scowled.

Billy snatched his slingshot and sprinted for the main house, listening for the tapping of the girl’s sandals. “You’re so slow, dumb girls! Better pick it up, or you’ll miss the show.”

Skidding to the side of the house, he tossed the slingshot outside the delivery door. Sophie Mae and Dink ducked behind the recessed walls of the doorway as he entered the kitchen.

Mrs. Worthington waddled from the pantry, her arms overflowing with flour, yeast, and sugar canisters. Billy grabbed the lightest one that balanced on the tips of her fingers. “Hi, Mom. I’m leaving now. Bye!”

Mrs. Worthington dropped the canisters to the counter. “Where are you going, exactly?”

“To the carnival, like we agreed.”

Billy’s answer triggered her hands to her hips. “There was no such agreement. The carnival is dangerous, and I’d never allow such an outing.”

“But you said if I helped Mr. George with his chores, I could go. I even promised to bring Dink. Are you going back on your word, Mom? You always tell me a person of character never goes—”

“Yes, I know what I said.”

“So, can I leave now?”

“I don’t remember…” she mumbled, flipping through her memory notepad.

“You never remember anything, Mom. Especially when it’s me. You even missed my birthday this year. But I guess I shouldn’t expect you to honor our agreements when I’ve been such a terrible son? I’ll just go to my room.” He rubbed his eyes, winking at Sophie Mae and Dink.

“Alright. You can go to the carnival, but you have to bring Dink and Sophie Mae. And be home by eight.
