CAMILLE TO DELPHINE, MAY 19, 1825

SENT BY PRIVATE COURIER

Delphine,

There’s no need to endanger yourself so recklessly by going out alone. I will bring Ari to you. Be patient.

Camille

CAMILLE DUPIN TO JULIE MORÈRE, MAY 19, 1825

SENT BY PRIVATE COURIER

My dear Julie,

Delphine and I are hardly seeing each other because her profoundly unwell former lover is haunting my house like a hairy ghost.

God, Julie, I’m trying to be thoughtful and responsible and I hate it. I’ve never hated anything so much. Delphine keeps asking me to come see her and I keep declining.

I’ve been avoiding her in order to help the man she loves more than me.

What is wrong with me, Julie?

I know what’s wrong with Ari and Delphine—they’ve both suffered terribly—but I’m wealthy and famous and pampered, blessed with intellect, artistic genius, and rakish good looks, and nothing bad has ever happened to me. There is a straight and simple avenue to getting what I want, and it’s evicting this man from my life and returning to Delphine’s bed, and I can’t understand why I’m not doing that.
