Courtney wasnât sure why she had dressed up more than she usually would for work, but sheâd put on lipstick and eyeliner, where normally, she reserved those two things for meetings with important clients. She also had to leave around six-forty-five just to get over there, find a parking space, and make it into the café, and sheâd have about twenty minutes in the café if she was going to make it into the office by her usual time. She wasnât even sure it was worth it. What was she hoping would happen? Andrea had said she was usually here around eight, and that hadnât guaranteed sheâd be here. The coffee at The Meet Cute was good, but driving this far out of her way for it would be ridiculous.
âYou made it?â
âOh, hi. Yeah,â Courtney replied.
Andrea was stirring something into her cup at the condiments station. It was a to-go cup. Of course, it was. Andrea had stopped in before work to get her coffee to-go. Courtney had driven all the way over here to have a thirty-second conversation with a woman she didnât know before said woman got in her car and ran off to work.
âSo, you made it?â Andrea repeated.
âI did,â Courtney replied as she stood in line now that she knew Andrea had a drink and was about to leave.
Andrea walked over and said, âI would have waited to order, but Iââ
âHave to get to work; itâs okay.â
Andrea smiled and said, âI was going to say that I wasnât sure youâd be here. I waited until ten after.â
âYou waited?â Courtney asked.
Andrea nodded.
âIâm sorry. I tried to make it by eight⦠I live downtown.â
âIs your office nearby here?â
Courtney laughed and said, âNot even close.â
âNo?â
âNo. This time of day, itâs going to take me about forty minutes.â
Andrea smiled and asked, âSo, you need to go?â
Courtney stepped up in line and said, âI have about twenty minutes.â
âI can get a table.â
âI thought you had to go.â
âWhy?â
âTo-go cup.â
âOh, they were out of mugs when I ordered. I usually sit here for a bit and read the news on my phone.â
âI donât want to interrupt your usual plans,â Courtney said.
âNo, please do. I could use some adult time,â Andrea replied. âWork is work, and the rest of my time has been spent with my daughter and her girlfriend or with my other daughter on the phone with her asking how Iâm doing.â
âThey love you. Thatâs a good thing,â Courtney said, moving up in line again.
âI know. I just⦠I wasnât expecting this.â
âYour children caring enough about you to check on you?â
âNo, being divorced at fifty,â Andrea replied.
âDo you mind if I askââ
âHi,â a barista Courtney didnât recognize said. âWhat can I get for you?â
âOh, just a large coffee.â
âRoom for cream?â
âNo, thanks,â she said.
âLet me get it,â Andrea offered when Courtney pulled out her credit card. âYou came all the way here, and youâre only ordering a plain coffee.â Andrea handed the barista her own card.
âYou didnât have to do that,â Courtney replied.
âI wanted to,â she said.
