Chapter 12

CARLY

“Do I look okay? It’s not too much, is it?” I check my reflection in the mirror for the twentieth time, smoothing my hands down my simple navy jacket and navy and lime green chevron skirt. It’s a bit loud, but if Jolene is as eccentric as Hallie says she is, it might earn me bonus points.

“You look perfect.” Alana adjusts the back of my collar. “And if you ever get sick of those shoes, don’t throw them away… throw them at me. You know, figuratively.”

I grin at her in the mirror. “Alana Faulkner in heels instead of Converse?”

She rolls her eyes. “I like heels for the right occasion.”

“Yeah? Like in bed with that hunky bull rider of yours?”

Her face flushes, but she doesn’t bother denying it. Even the thick walls of this house couldn’t keep their secrets last night.

“Speaking of hunky men, I noticed you and Kaden have been spending a lot of time together.”

“Don’t worry—he’s not wooing me.” Not too much anyway.

She snorts. “You know I was just giving him a hard time. If you’re interested in him, go for it.”

Good thing, because I might’ve already done that. “He is really sweet.”

“He’s a solid guy. Level-headed and genuine, and if you plan to stick around, why not?” She lifts a shoulder, but I’m not about to indulge her more than I’ve already said, so I change the subject.

“Speaking of sticking around, what do you think about renting out your old apartment above the market?”

Her eyes widen. “To you?”

“Yeah. I can’t stay here forever if I do get the job.”

“Too bad I didn’t know you were coming, or I would have saved Old Man Morton’s house for you. I just rented it out a few months ago after Holden and I fixed it up. It’s a lot nicer than that shabby apartment.”

“I don’t need anything fancy. Just a place to call my own for a while. Eventually, I’d like to buy a house.” I’d love my little one to have a yard to play in someday. And maybe a dog.

“Um, sure. I mean it when I say it’s shabby. But most of my old furniture is still there, so you wouldn’t need much. I can show it to you later if you want to come by the store after your interview.”

“Perfect.”

“You’re gonna nail this interview, by the way.” Alana gives me a quick squeeze. “And I’m going to love every second of having you here in Mason Creek. Mom will, too.”
