Reality of Circumstances
The Reality of our Self is, of course, not separate from the Reality of our Circumstances. And while it is true that we all look at the world through different eyes and have different responses to it, it is important to see our circumstances as outside us. In this way we can discern our responsibility in light of those circumstances. For example, for one person the reality of her circumstances really hit her when she looked at what inspired her: âI like to think that I do this work to help people see the possibilities of life even when they are often very sick, but in reality I am not working from that energy, I am stuck in paperwork and meetings.â
Here, through working with the model, she recognised that her circumstances have changed to the extent that work that previously was meaningful, and that she still feels should be meaningful, has in fact turned into a series of meaningless bureaucratic tasks.
In this section we explore a range of responses people have to the Reality of their Circumstances. But we will begin with Exercise 5.3 for you to explore your own response to the Reality of your Circumstances.
Exercise 5.3
ⶠPurpose
To explore the impact of circumstances on your Inspiration.
ⶠInstructions
Looking back at Exercises 5.1 and 5.2, notice how your circumstances play a part in whether or not you are able to maintain connection with your inspiration.
Make sure that you carefully note all circumstances that affect your situation. Try not to self-censure at this point, e.g. donât go âoh, that is not really a big dealâ; just write it all down.
Is there one specific circumstance that challenges you, or does it âall just seem too hardâ?
What ways do you have to support yourself in keeping going?
What continues to defeat you?
