Lucian was as mental as Victor claimed him to be. Though he was aware of the truth, he would never utter a word of it. That phone call was his panic talking, the wild need to know where his blood pair was so he could protect him. His nature didn’t care to acknowledge that Victor was more than capable of doing so himself. When the vamp said the same thing for the twentieth time, he lost it.

He knew how to hurt people. With weapons, sure, but more often through cutting words. Growing up under his father's watchful eye was a constant source of anxiety and scrutiny. He’d trained himself to interpret body language and speech patterns by the age of eight and learned how to manipulate them to his advantage by fifteen.

Glimpses of a person's true nature could be observed in the first ten minutes of meeting them. What mannerisms they held, what tic surfaced when they lied or told the truth, how confident or fearful they were. Lucian saw too much of others, and never enough of himself. However… he hadn’t wanted to hurt Victor in that way.

“I’m such a prick,” he muttered, deftly flipping the grilled cheese.

But he was here now… if that even counted for anything. He hadn’t apologized before Victor fell asleep, but he’d thought about it. Turned it over and over again in his mind, trying to figure out how to say it in a way that didn’t make it worse. He and Victor were like two cunning boxers in the ring, more inclined to block a blow than throw one of their own. It wasn't until one of them went off that the blood started flowing.

Lucian grumbled under his breath as he clicked off the heat and dropped the sandwich onto Victor's cutting board. He dragged the knife across the top, listening to the crunch of the bread. Contrary to his image, the saint took care of himself and his home, which included cooking. He’d gotten a pretty good grasp on it over the years and was secretly delighted at the opportunity to show it off. No one could resist his grilled cheese and tomato basil soup, and this was perfect for someone who was sick.

Victor wasn’t exactly sick, per se, just an idiot. The saint was still angry at him for going so long without blood. He’d felt genuine fear for the first time when he burst into the vamp’s bathroom to find him passed out beside the toilet. His skin was blue and cold, not having enough blood left to circulate.

For a moment, Lucian thought he’d already lost him, slamming to his knees and pulling his body closer. But then Victor shuddered in a breath, and he wasted no time in feeding him. Now he wanted to feed him again, but this time with something he offered rather than forced upon the vamp.

He cut the sandwiches in half, plating them around the bowls of soup before sliding them across the island. Lucian
