“What’s that you’re whistling, Mr. Palmer?” Greg Wade, his newest salesman asked, poking his head through the door.

Ben abruptly stopped perusing sales figures for the month and shook his head at himself. He hadn’t realized he’d been whistling until Greg pointed it out.

“It sounded kinda like Hootie and the Blowfish,” Greg said. “The sales reports must look pretty good if you’re whistling.”

“They’re good,” Ben said, but he suspected the reason he was whistling had more to do with a certain history professor, whose mind he enjoyed muddling.

“So, you’re in a good mood?” Greg continued.

Leaning back in his chair, Ben swallowed a chuckle. He knew where this was heading. Three other employees had visited him this afternoon. “Yeah. I’m not eating glass today.”

Greg squared his shoulders. “Well, I was wondering if I could have a raise. I met my quota every week except—”

Ben smiled and shook his head. “No.”

Greg’s face fell. “No?”

“No, but after you beat your quota for the next four weeks, ask me again.”

Greg scratched his chin for a moment, then nodded. “Okay. I’ll be back in four weeks.”

Ben watched the salesman stride out of his office with a renewed kick of purpose. Ben had always known he didn’t have a sales personality. He was too damn blunt. Consequently he surrounded himself with terrific sales performers. In the past couple of years, he’d figured out what made these guys tick. They needed someone to raise the bar, then provide the reward. It was the same way he’d once felt about stunt driving. He’d always wanted to try a more difficult stunt. The reward had been the thrill of succeeding. His problem, however, had been the diminishing thrill.

If someone had tried to tell him ten years ago that stunt driving would get old, he would have said they were crazy. Within the past few years, however, breaking a few bones and nearly breaking his neck just to pop a wheelie a few inches higher didn’t give him the same kick. His sister, Maddie, said his waning obsession with risk was a sign of maturity. Ben had snorted at her theory, just as he continued to snort at her suggestion that he change the make and model of the women he dated.

He would rather drink oil than admit it, but maybe Maddie had more on the ball than he’d thought. Glancing at his phone, he remembered making love to Amelia last night. All day, the sweet, sensual picture of her hadn’t been far from his mind. The sounds of her sighs and moans played over his nerve endings. The one-second image of the expression on her face when he’d plunged inside her had the power to make him hard.

A twinge of unease prickled under his skin.

It wasn’t permanent, he reminded himself. Maddie might be right about a few things, but she was totally wrong about him and marriage.

Plus, there was the matter of the recent offer he’d received for the dealership. Selling the business would give him the opportunity to regain some of his freedom.
