I followed Hanna to the Stork that we were going to fly away in and realised that for the first time I would be in the sky in a Luftwaffe aircraft – a plane belonging to the German Air Force.

The cramped rear passenger seat of the Stork was cold, but compared to the unprotected school glider, the small enclosed cabin seemed luxurious. I watched my village drop away from me for the last time. My body was still stiff and numb, but my heart and mind were racing with excitement.

At last I was going to do something real to help with the war – and I was leaving behind the intense fear and uncertainty that I’d been living with ever since Region Leader Wulfsen’s visit. From now on, I would be flying for Germany. I would be serving my country, not living in fear of its officials.

I have no enemy left in all the world, I thought, recalling Emil’s favourite passage from Wind, Sand and Stars. That’s how I felt now.

Oh! I realised suddenly that I’d left Emil’s book next to my bed. How I would miss Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s flight adventures!

I comforted myself with the thought that now I would be living my own flight adventures.

Then I turned away from Ulmenhain and looked over Hanna’s shoulder at the open sky ahead of me.
