Chapter 21
With a smile at Callius and Sarah, Ethmira followed Antoine out of the room. The two young healers who had helped Katherine left as well and the senior cleric bustled around the infirmary, tidying up and throwing used towels into a hamper.
Sarah sat down on the cot next to Callius and looked at him with an understanding smile.
âIt sucks, doesn't it?â she asked.
The scryer looked puzzled.
âI'm sorry, but I do not know what that means,â he replied.
âIt's an expression we humans use,â Sarah explained. âBasically we say it when something happens that we can't do anything about. Like how it sucks that you're stuck here in this room while your home and your people may be in danger.â
âOh, I see. Yes, it does suck.â
He looked down at the leather clothing he was wearing, noticing for the first time that there were bits of leaves and twigs caught in some of its folds. There was also a cut along one side that made him shiver.
âIt looks like one of those monsters took a slash at me and barely missed,â he muttered.
Sarah leaned forward and looked at the torn leather.
âWow, that was a close one,â she agreed. âYou're lucky that you managed to reach me when you did.â
She sat back and looked at him curiously.
âHow did you do that, by the way?â she asked. âAnd why me? I know you told Ethmira that you contacted someone who could use magic, but there's lots of people who can do that now. Well, not lots, but a fair amount. You could have reached out to Tamara or Sebastian. Heck, there's a dozen mages here in Nottinghill that you could have called. But you called me. Why?â
Callius shrugged and smiled shyly.
âBecause you are my friend, I suppose,â he replied. âAnd I know that your powers are different. You don't use spells, Sarah. You simply call upon the magic and shape it to your will. That's what I do with ley energy. We are very much alike, so I can easily sense your aura. It glows like a star even now, when you are sitting beside me. Ethmira and I had no time left, so I focused on you and transported us to where you were. I don't know what happened after that.â
âMy aura? I didn't even know I had one.â
âEveryone has one. We scryers are taught to see them when we are very young. I suppose that I am the only elf left now who has that ability. Such a shame.â
He lay back on his elbows and stared up at the high ceiling, finding its warm wood paneling comforting for some reason.
âI'm just guessing, by the way,â he told Sarah without turning his head to look at her. âAbout why I teleported to your location. It all happened so fast that I don't even remember calling for help. But it's what I would have done if I'd had more time, so I assume that's what I did.â
Sarah lay back as well and the two of them shared a quiet moment.
