Chapter Eight

Jace had been cooped up at his parents’ house and had only managed a bit of freedom when he’d told everyone he had urgent business to see to at his company.

That didn’t stop Sir Devon Montcalm, Captain of Korosol’s Royal Guard, from shadowing him. Every time he turned around, the solemn, well-built, by-the-book guy was there. If a person was used to this sort of thing, it would be okay. But for Jace, who’d been captain of the wrestling team in college and was no slouch in the fist department if the situation was unavoidable, the very idea of someone thinking he needed his body guarded pricked at his ego.

This utter lack of privacy gave him a few doubts about what his great-uncle was urging him to do. Hell, he hadn’t considered himself a possible heir to the throne. Ninth in line was pretty low on the food chain. Besides, he’d never even set foot on Korosolan soil.

But he was a man who loved a challenge, and this new venture, the idea of being a king, appealed to him. More than he’d realized it would.

Plus, his uncle had confided that he had a rare heart disease. His days were numbered. He was desperate to know he had the right successor before the inevitable happened.

That had just about cinched it for Jace. Family had always been important to him, and family duty was something he never shirked. Even though he’d never been to Korosol, it was his heritage, his roots. Aside from the family draw, though, was the excitement he felt toward a new project, like the barely contained excitement he’d experienced when first going into business for himself. He’d taken Carracell Inc. to the top. This was the perfect time in his life to dig his teeth into something new.

But Vickie had a stake in his decision, and he couldn’t, wouldn’t make it without her.

Anxious to see her, knowing he had Sir Devon on his tail, he put the Porsche in gear and wound it out, grinning when the distance between his taillights and the black sedan lengthened. Oh, he figured the guy would eventually catch up, but he might as well make him work for it.

Vickie’s car wasn’t on the street when he parked in front of her apartment. She should have been home from school by now. She was due to work at Diamond Jim’s tonight, but since he hadn’t seen her in almost forty-eight hours, he was restless and impatient.

He’d called yesterday, but she’d told him she had a migraine and just needed to rest. And since Easton, his closest advisors and Miriam Kerr had been buzzing around him like bees on a honeycomb, firing information and instruction on protocol faster than he could keep up, he’d stayed away for the day.

But he was worried about her, because when he’d called this morning before she left for school, she hadn’t sounded good.

He should have put everyone else on hold, gone to her yesterday regardless of her insistence that she’d be fine, taken care of her, rubbed her head, made her chicken soup.
