The Journey Back

Amelia waited on the shore for a while, alone. She didn’t have Sam, she didn’t have the witches, and it felt like she didn’t even have her mother anymore—even though she’d forgiven Stephanie for her deception. What am I going to do?

Finally, she made herself turn around. She walked back up the sand to the path where she found her mother waiting in the parking lot, legs hanging out of the side of the car where she sat.

Her mother stood, noticing her. “It worked?”

“Yeah.” Amelia stuck her hands in her pockets and could feel the small piece of paper that Sofia had given her. She wasn’t sure if she was brave enough to ever use it. “We should go.”

Her mother settled back into the driver’s seat while Amelia circled around to sit beside her. It was hot in the car, which only made her feel more miserable. How had everything gone so wrong? As Amelia’s mother drove away from the lake and back to the main road, exhaustion pulled at her, and she seriously considered fading off to sleep so that she didn’t have to worry about her problems anymore.

But her mother began to speak. “If you could change your mind right now and go with them, would you?”

Amelia didn’t turn to look at her mother. “No.”

“Because of Sam?”

“It would be cruel to leave her. And besides, I don’t think I could do it without her, anyway.”

Stephanie tapped her nails against the wheel. “Really?”

“Really.”

“And if you were never friends with Sam?”

“I am friends with Sam,” said Amelia.

“Now, here’s my concern,” Stephanie began. “I believe that a large part of the reason that you rejected Sofia and Harriet was because you want to be selfless. You’re resilient, Mellie. You could do it without her.”

“I—”

“Let me finish,” said her mother. “You can’t keep disappearing, losing time, breaking dishes. You need help, and there’s nothing selfish about asking for help.” She peeled her eyes off of the road for a moment. “You can be selfish sometimes.”

Amelia opened her mouth to argue, and then closed it again, feeling very frustrated. “I am being selfish. I want to stay with Sam.”

Her mother gave her a funny look, but only for a moment.

“I don’t want to leave the person who I already feel is my partner to be with the people who say they’re supposed to be my partners.”

“Not even if it means learning about yourself and your magic?”

Amelia leaned to the side and placed her elbow on the edge of the window. “Now you see my conflict,” she sighed.

“I do.”

“And what would you do?”

“Unfortunately, I think you’re asking the wrong person.”

Amelia huffed. “So, who should I ask?”

“Gloria Grover.”

Amelia straightened, surprised. She hadn’t ever mentioned the strange librarian to Stephanie, had she? “How do you know her?” Amelia had only just learned the woman’s name the day before.

“Sofia told me. She told me all about your trip to the library.” She cocked her head to the side in thought. “Did you know that woman is a vampire? I didn’t even know vampires were real.
