CHAPTER 23
General Drake limped behind Captain Andrews and Private Joseph, his sight fixed upon the rock-strewn, uneven ground. His breath escaped in ragged bursts. Dull pains throbbed with each step and gasp. Despite the pulse of agony rippling through him, however, he felt livelier. It had been too long since heâd been outside, and even longer since heâd given his muscles a good workout. That, and he could tell by the thickness of the air that they were nearing the base of the mountain.
That didnât keep him from regretting leaving the safety of the NORAD complex, though. The facilityâs blast doors had been activated, with the main pathway which wound north-to-south through the mountain itself (albeit at a curve) being the only place accessible to outsiders. No one and nothing could have gotten in had they tried. Wraiths, maybe, but they would have to know the layout.
During their stint, theyâd had access to the gym, chapel, hospitalâwhatever their hearts desired. Foodâreal food, not MREs and random hunting spoilsâhad been bountiful. Even the eggs had been natural: the complex housed livestock saved from the effects of war and included hens and roosters. Heat and lighting had kept their environment comfortable. The lake of diesel nestled within the mountain complex would sustain it for years if needed. Plumbing. Warm showers. Silence. Undisturbed sleep. Safety.
A real taste of the good life again.
A grimace crippled his face. He hadnât had a chance to visit the gym and regain his strength. Iâm going to hurt something fierce when we get where weâre going, he thought. The trek to the public gate had been arduous enough: a mile-plus stretch, hindered by the damage done by Undead or looters who had ransacked the place before and after the Human Armyâs fall. The parking lot hadnât been any betterâit had been reduced to the granite rubble which had formed it to begin with, making it a treacherous obstacle course.
How much farther did they have to go? Ten miles or so to reach the cityâs airport? More if they had to go to Peterson Air Force Base?
He convinced himself it would all be worth it in the end. Even if it meant destroying his battered body beyond repair to help in what he believed to be the final affront against the Undead.
He winced as his left ankle teetered on the precipice of a small divot he hadnât detected. With a grunt, he righted his footing, denying the earth a chance to further incapacitate him. If Iâm going to be laid up, itâs going to be because I fought valiantly, not because of a damn misstep.
He glanced over his shoulder as Lester likewise tripped into a hidden divot. The bedraggled pilot shook it off, grumbling beneath his breath. Drake returned his one-eyed gaze to the path before him and suppressed a chuckle. He was certain heâd heard the redhead take the Lordâs name in vain. Odd. Iâd swear he was a bloody priest the last time I saw him.
The thought
