KNOCKS AND BUMPS

The garden is as good a place as any to pick up a few knocks and bumps; as gardeners, we spend more time in it than on a big soft couch (safe and out of harm’s way). These knocks may be simple mishaps, such as walking into a low branch, for example, but often they are task- or tool-related. Some, such as stepping on a rake and piercing your foot – are covered in detail in the ‘Common garden accidents’ section, but, for now, here are some general bumps along the road to a perfect garden.

Banged elbow, knee or shin

The first action should be to rub the affected area – this disrupts sensation receptors and is very effective. Then walk it off – get on with what you were doing as this gives the brain something else to focus on, engages other neurotransmitters and steps off the pain agenda more quickly. The aescin found in a tincture or paste of horse chestnut can ease pain, swelling and bruising – great also for tired legs and muscle cramps. Wintergreen is pain-relieving when absorbed through the skin.

Knocked out

If it is safe to do so, place the casualty in the recovery position and dial the emergency services. If it is you that has been knocked out, get to hospital for a check-up when you regain consciousness.
