Jill sat at the table watching Greg make dinner, trying to think about how to word things. How could she tell him about there was something definitely unnerving about the new house?
Haunted was too strong a word but there was something about it she didn’t like. It wasn’t just the creaking floorboards or the voice that had whispered to her in the attic. It wasn’t the mold that had reappeared on the bedroom wall already, mold that looked increasingly like a face, no matter what Greg said.
There was something about the house itself that was weighing on her more and more. But how to raise it with him though without sounding like she was going mad?
“Are you ready for the meal of your life?” he asked, turning around and carrying her plate over. “Steamed veg and pork chops. I microwaved the veg bags myself. Who needs an Aga?”
“I’m impressed. It’s like living with an actual chef.”
“I am a chef, just not a very good one.”
“That’s all right, I’m not that fussy.” She paused for a second. “Which is why I picked you for a partner.”
He brought his plate over and then sat opposite her. He looked so happy she was finding it increasingly difficult to broach the subject.
“Promise me you won’t go in the attic again without me here,” he said, spooning apple sauce from a jar to the top of his pork chop. “What if something happened to the baby while you were up there?”
“What if something happens to the baby when I’m sitting in the lounge?”
“You’d be able to call for help for one thing. I can’t believe you went up there without your phone. What were you looking for anyway?”
It was the question she’d been dreading.
“I heard a noise up there,” she said at last, her appetite fast disappearing. “It sounded like mice.”
“And was it?”
“I couldn’t see any. I did find a book though, about this place.”
“About the house?”
“It features in this book of local ghost stories. There’s a whole load of stories about this place. Apparently, the guy who planted the forest did it to try and protect the house from evil spirits. He thought the trees would make them lose their way. ”
“Oh wow, that’s pretty cool.”
She put her fork down. “I don’t think it’s cool.”
“Oh, come on. You’re not going to tell me you believe in all that nonsense.”
“It’s not nonsense.” She felt on the verge of tears. “It said Deadwood House is the site of the chapel where an actual demon was exorcised.”
“It’s just a story.” He picked up a forkful of veg and shoved it into his mouth.
“You might think it’s just a story but I don’t like it, okay? What if it’s true?”
He put his cutlery down. “So don’t read the books. You’ll only scare yourself. You remember when we watched Paranormal Activity and you couldn’t sleep with the light off for a week?”
“What else was I supposed to do up there? I was stuck in the attic in case you’ve forgotten.
