âI donât remember seeing it before.â Sunday held the medallion between two fingers. Her brow furrowed, drawing the piece closer to look at the markings. âWhist or Patience would know better than me. Whist reads all sorts of history books.â
âThis isnât in any books. At least, not ones that exist anymore. Even Davos wasnât sure on it.â Taking the item and putting it back in his pocket, Cam heard music coming from an open window. One of the restaurants nearby. There were several of them surrounding the records office. All of them charged a small fortune for the lightest of lunches. He shook his head. âWhist would feel the need to report it and Patience still blames herself for not being there to help bring Angeli down. Besides, until we know who we can trustâ¦â
They both stood for a moment. It wasnât something either of them wanted to consider, but the more people who knew what was going on, the higher the chances someone would tell Mother Ashya and their investigation would be shut down.
Cam didnât know what Ashyaâs involvement might be, but the Mother Superior had made it clear she did not want people digging around.
Sunday informed him the company had taken Fridayâs possessions from the Weeklies house and officially declared him retired. âThe story is he moved to Delf to be with family. Wednesday isnât buying it, but he wonât say anything about it.â
Cam had always known Mother Ashya to have a ruthless side when it came to protecting the company and the faith, but he had never thought of her as dishonest. Quite the opposite. The Mother Superior might omit facts from time to time, might decree that some truths were on a need-to-know basis, but she was otherwise straight as an arrow and unabashed in her authority. Camellia respected that, even if they didnât always like one another.
âIn the meantimeâ¦â Sunday gestured to the other side of the road. The records office beckoned, stone steps leading into an officious looking building. âThose files arenât going to check themselves.â
She strode forward, ignoring the indignant car horns that beeped as they crossed. Her step was longer than his, so Cam had to almost run to keep up with her. âCould have done with a Dasher for this.â
Sunday snorted. âWell, youâve got me which will have to do.â
Cam didnât say anything, but he was glad Sunday was there. June still didnât want to see him. Forget-Me-Not probably wasnât speaking to him. Camellia never set out to harm anyone. But he had a habit of becoming singularly focused and rarely noticed the collateral damage he caused until it was too late. He should have been more understanding of Forget-Me-Notâs troubles, and he should have been more sensitive to Juneâs faith. Sometimes, it surprised him that he should have any friends at all.
Camellia held the door open and Sunday swept through, lifting her chin to look out from beneath her wide brimmed hat. She wore it at a slight angle, tipped to cover her right eye.
