She could not believe it. She had just been threatened by a police officer. Never in her life did she ever think that would happen to her.

And she was angry. Furious. Her limbs trembled when she thought of his stupid, fat, condescending face looking at her in the rearview mirror. Trying to scare and intimidate her.

She turned and looked at the bus station. It was busier than she thought it would be. It must have been a hub along a longer line of stops. She saw people loading up onto a bus and preparing to leave. She imagined herself among them. Leaving town and leaving all her things behind and, most importantly, leaving behind the memory of Dennis.

No. She would not do it.

She would not be intimidated by some bully small town sheriff. It just was not going to happen.

Eleanor was no stranger to the games people played with their power. There were a select few who thought she did not deserve her position back in Manhattan, and they made that abundantly clear by their actions and ways they tried to undermine her. She’d made it very well known that she was there to stay, both by delivering quality work and by not bending to the will of bullies.

And the same would happen here and now.

She took out her phone and called the only friend she had in Finnick.

“Hey,” Sean said.

“Hey, Sean. I have a little problem.”

She told him where she was, but not how she had gotten there. She just said she was stranded and needed a lift back to town. She tried to keep the concerned edge from her voice, but Sean picked up on it.

“I’ll be right there,” he said.

It took thirty minutes before his pickup truck pulled into the parking lot. Eleanor climbed into the front seat and they headed back to town.

“Are you okay?” Sean asked.

She told him the story. She watched his face as he drove, listening, and she saw the look of concern cross his eyes.

When she was done, Sean shook his head. “Tony Carson. I always knew there was something about the man. I never messed around with him, even when I was a kid, and still don’t mess around with him now. If I stay out of his business, he’ll stay out of mine.”

“Well, I guess he’s decided I’m in his business,” Eleanor said.

She chewed on her finger as she stared out the window. The flat, green landscape passed by in a whir. Sean drove a lot slower and safer than Carson. “Do you think he would hurt me? Like, really hurt me?”

“I would like to think not,” Sean said.

Eleanor continued to stare out the window as they drove along. Sean fell silent, and she wondered just how much further she should involve him. If he got too close to her then Carson could come after him as well. Sean may have already come to that conclusion and resigned to keep away from her after this. He’d already told her he didn’t want to be on Carson’s radar.
