Virginia breathed freer on the dimly lit terrace. Though it was still early in the evening, here and there a couple or a small group stood, no-one paying her any particular mind. Worried that Robert might soon follow, she slipped down the wide steps that led to a small parterre and then walked swiftly across it towards the shrubbery beyond.

Here there were small lamps and torches placed at intervals but not enough to disturb the shadowy walks. Though it was silent and empty where she stood, she knew there must be bolder couples wandering the shadowy aisles. She felt a little foolish for running off now, instead of just returning inside. Indeed she was missing out on her first real dance, which was meant to be such an important event.

Rather than stand still, she wandered at a relaxed pace, wishing that she had a timepiece on her. It was hard to judge whether three or ten minutes had passed since she’d left Robert. She wanted to be sure he had enough time to abandon any idea of pursuit and return indoors. She thought it likely he had given up and gone inside quite quickly—he would probably forget all of this in no time at all. But then she had also thought he must have known how awful and awkward their kiss was, yet he appeared to have found it delightful.

It occurred to her that there must be something wrong with her. A proper young lady did not entice a man to kiss her. A proper young lady would be flattered by such admiration from a solid, upright man. Even if she did not feel any great passion for him, she did not positively dislike Robert. Well, maybe she disliked him a little, but only for silly, girlish reasons that ought to be subdued and conquered.

Perhaps it had been an electric kiss, and she was the one mistaken? How could she find the embrace of a respectable man so repulsive, yet respond so passionately to Julia’s wicked punishments and degrading pleasures. She wondered if there was not something deeply wrong with her, that she could not give unless something was taken first. She wondered if this had always been inside her or if it had been molded and formed by Mr. Hayes.

A rustling and what might have been a footstep sounded behind her. She sighed to think that Robert had followed her after all. Hoping to avoid a meeting she lifted her skirts slightly and hurried her steps, turning a corner at the soonest opportunity.

She could not make out any definite sounds over her own steps, but she felt there was someone drawing nearer. If it was Robert, why did he not call out? A frisson of alarm went through her at the idea that he was silently and relentlessly chasing her down. This was the greatest emotional reaction he had ever garnered with her—there truly must be something broken in her. Exasperated with her endless, pointless musing over what exactly was wrong with her, Virginia stopped and turned.
