Chapter eight
Inside the abandoned house, Beth was lining the moldy kitchen counter with liquor bottles.
âWhat are you doing?â Syd asked, her voice cracking with fear. âLittle late for a cocktail party, dontcha think?â
Beth ignored her, pointing to the floor. âLook for all the empty bottles you can find. Looks like somebodyâs been using this place to get drunk or high, and thereâs some booze left in some of these.â
Mold speckled the walls and there was garbage in virtually every corner of the room. The appliances had rusted, and the only furniture remaining was a rickety wooden table and two chairs, one of which lay overturned. A sludgy patina of rust and black coated every surface like a bad coat of paint. Here and there, broken glass sparkled out from the darkness amid disintegrating cigarette butts and crumbled balls of tinfoil.
âWhat do we need bottles for?â Syd asked, peering into the dim corners of the filthy room.
âMolotov cocktails,â Beth said, tucking a stray lock of blonde curly hair behind her ear as she examined a cracked bottle of McCormick gin.
âDo you know how to make them?â Syd asked, picking up another bottle and handing it to Beth.
âI hope so,â Beth answered. âI need rags.â
Audrey picked her way across the sludge as she stepped from room to room. The house took less than three minutes to pass through and she returned to the kitchen, carrying an armful of greasy gray cloth. âTon of old t-shirts in the bedroom,â she said, dumping them on the counter.
âGood,â Beth said as she began ripping the shirts into strips. âYâall can help any time you want,â she said sharply.
Audrey joined her, tearing the flimsy fabric with shaking fingers.
âWhat bedroom?â Syd asked, looking around for a hallway and finding none.
Audrey pointed back toward the front. âLiving room, bedroom, kitchen. Shotgun house, so called âcause you could ââ
âFire a gun through the front and hit our asses right back here,â Syd finished. âGreat.â
âDonât worry,â Audrey eyed the front entrance, âCarl wonât need a gun.â
Syd swallowed. âThatâs comforting.â She bent down to pluck a shirt Audrey had dropped onto the grimy floor. âWell, lucky we found all this leftover clothing, huh?â
âItâs not luck,â Audrey commented. âWhoever lived here probably never had a chance to grab their stuff before they left.â
âIf they left,â Beth said grimly. Then she held up the gin bottle and jammed a rag into the mouth.
âHowâd you learn to do that?â Syd asked, âThey sure didnât cover this during fire safety month at the PTA.â
âNo they didnât,â Beth answered, âI got this idea from Shaun of the Dead.â
âDonât tell me that,â Syd said, âPlease just say âyes I totally know what the hell Iâm doingâ and Iâll feel so much better.â
âSyd,â Beth looked up at her friend, âShut up and help me.â Then Beth looked at up Audrey, who was trying to tug at the few crumbling shades still hanging from the windows.
âIf thereâs anyone out at this hour, I donât think we want the company.â
