Chapter Six: Marc Kills God

Consuela’s office, as it transpired, was at the end of a hexagonal corridor of crystal, like a tube punched through a mirror. Floating in the endless dark recesses of the crystal that surrounded the corridor were dozens of naked bodies, cocooned and frozen in place, like flies trapped in amber. Marc spotted, as he walked past, the naked body of Ryan Frayne – save that his lower half was only half formed. It was like he was being slowly massaged out of fleshy clay. Marc nodded to himself as Consuela walked through the semi-transparent doors of her office, which was a spartan, spherical room with a crystal desk, an uncomfortable looking granite chair, and several floating crystals along the walls. The floor was flat and smooth and as Marc stepped in, he said: “Wild decor.”

“You are within technology far beyond your mind, no matter how potent your manhood,” Consuela said, her voice still arrogant, despite her change of heart.

“Well,” Marc said. “Those rings are all coordinated by a central computer, and when you die, you get reformed here.” He jerked his head. “Those bodies were dead Elites that were being rebuilt, right? So, this has to be some kind of gigantic computer and support system that runs the Vortex and everything inside. I bet that the Coordinator is the human interface between the machine intelligence and you – and I bet the second level meditation thing has something to do with it. Uh, implants in the brain mediating direct mind-to-mind communication? Am I hot? Cold?”

Consuela turned to face him, her jaw opening in shock.

“Knew it!” Marc’s smile was quite smug. “But what I don’t know is who exactly I need to defeat to destroy this place: the Coordinator or the Tabernacle itself?”

Consuela looked aside. “I have never seen the Coordinator. But I do know that the Tabernacle is from whence the Vortex comes - it is the source of our immortality and the dome and the rings and… and everything. If you were to defeat it, then the Coordinator too would be undone.” She sighed. “And you have opened my eyes. This place is evil.” She blushed. “Your wild passion, your eager romance, your raw masculinity!”

“Thanks,” Marc said, grinning. “But uh, I have another power, you know. I have a near perfect understanding of human sexualities!”

“You do?” Consuela asked. “How?”

“Roleplaying games,” Marc said, casually, his arms crossed over his chest. “Which is why I know that you, Consuela, my perverted little minx, happen to have a thing for Brutal women. Being brutal.” He snapped his fingers. “Now, ladies.”

Zae’el and Alpha hadn’t had long to get the plan, and he had to whisper quietly. Fortunately, both women were, in their own way doms. Well, okay, Alpha wasn’t really a dom, but she could at least fake it reasonably well. Alpha flanked left, and Zae’el flanked right. Consulea’s eyes widened and she gasped, lifting her hand up – but before she could speak into her ring, Zae’el caught her wrist, then leaned forward.
