Her slumber was so deep her child’s agitation did not rouse her, Tommy noticed. He and Hweol both laid hands on Megan’s belly. Their contact sent messages of ownership into the dark sea in which it swam. “A good offering,” said Hweol. “The purest of blood can only bring us the Mother’s favour.”

“It would have been nice to have created a new generation,” said Tommy, sighing.

“I share your regret,” said Hweol. “If another could be found, then perhaps it would have been possible, but she is the only one at this time.”

“There would have been another,” said Tommy, “but she evaded us.” The anger remained at Catherine’s disobedience. It undermined his authority in the Weald. He had worried at Hweol’s reaction.

“I know the one you mean,” said Hweol. “I see all. Do not worry. She will be reclaimed.”

Hweol returned to his meal. This time, Tommy joined him, finishing the contents of Megan’s plate before extra dishes were brought in for them both. They continued to eat whilst Megan slept.
