Chapter Nineteen
Thankfully, the photos were over with quickly and then Mia and I could escape to Mrs. Baylorâs car.
âCan you believe he invited her to the dance? And then to our house?â Mia asked.
I shook my head because I knew words would betray my emotions.
âHe literally couldnât pick anyone else? I swear heâs such an idiot. Brittany showed him a little attention and he ran after it like a lovesick puppy.â
I gulped.
âIâm sorry. You must hate this, too.â
My eyes widened and I turned trying to figure out what she meant.
âYou hate her more than I do.â
I exhaled. âYeah. Letâs just forget about it.â
She slapped my knee. âThatâs the spirit. They wonât ruin the dance. We look hot and she can shove it.â
âYep,â I whispered, just as Mrs. Baylor got in.
âAll set, ladies. Here we go.â
Mia woohooed really loud and then Mrs. Baylor turned up the music. At least we were headed to the dance.
As expected, cars lined the parking lot, like it was drop off in the morning. Girls and guys unloaded from the cars and trucks and precariously walked through the doorways which were littered with balloon arches. They were in our school colors, purple, black, and white. Miaâs dress almost matched the purple balloons, but they were a shade or two lighter than Miaâs eggplant dress.
Mrs. Baylor leaned toward the passenger side. âWhen should I come back and get you two?â
Mia looked between the two of us and shrugged. âCan we text you like ten minutes before?â
Mrs. Baylor frowned. âI suppose. When is the dance supposed to be over?â
âLike ten?â
âSo, what if I get you girls at like ten-thirty?â
Miaâs eyes widened. âThirty minutes later than when itâs over?â
âWould you prefer it was thirty minutes earlier?â
She shook her head.
âThatâs what I figured. See you ladies then.â
We waited until she drove away before we went inside.
âThatâs peculiar,â Mia said.
âLetting us stay later? I agree.â
âWonder what sheâs up to.â
âI donât know, but letâs head in. I just shaved and I donât want goosebumps all over my legs ruining the perfectly smooth feeling.â
Mia giggled and shoved me lightly toward the door.
The hallway echoed with sounds of laughter and heels slapping the tile. I could feel the bass of the music from the gym, even from the front door.
Mr. Meyer sat at a fold out table in the middle of the hallway. It was also decorated with purple and white decorations like balloons and confetti, with a huge sign above his head saying, Homecoming Dance, Letâs go Raiders!
He looked positively bored at the table. Mr. Meyer was my freshman year English teacher, and he was cool when he talked about the novels we read, but otherwise, he never seemed interested in anything ⦠well, cats. He loved cats.
âGood evening, Mr. Meyer,â I said.
He squinted up at me, confusion at first, followed by sudden recognition. âAllie Duncan. Hello. Tickets?â
Mia and I handed our tickets over.
He ripped them in half and gave us the remainder. I kept mine in my clutch, but Mia tossed it the second we got past his table.
