2. There is an extremely difficult textual choice to be made at this point, between the future indicative genēsesthe and the aorist subjunctive genēsthe. Syntactically, the former can on rare occasions take on the meaning of the latter in this construction. Whatever the reading, the text is not telling us that fruit bearing makes a person a disciple, but that fruit bearing is the necessary and visible sign that one is in truth a disciple. The NIV rendering, though paraphrastic, is certainly correct.
