The academic and public discussions over the reasons behind the success of the far right entail various debates, which resurface across different geographical regions and time periods with depressing frequency. The election of Donald Trump saw many of these old debates being rehashed, in particular in the US, often with no knowledge of or reference to the volumes of articles and books already devoted to them in Europe in the 1990s or even in the US in the 1960s.
In most cases, positions in the debates are not as fundamentally opposed as their protagonists make them out to be. Some are actually interrelated, at times to the extent that they can barely be disentangled empirically, while others are complementary, explaining different subsets of far-right support. In the first section, I discuss four of the most prominent debates: protest versus support; economic anxiety versus cultural backlash; global versus local; and leader versus organization. The second section focuses on the demand side of far-right politics, arguing that, while the extreme right is fairly unconnected to mainstream politics, the populist radical right is better seen as a radicalization of mainstream politics. The chapter ends with a discussion of the role of the media, which functions as both a friend and foe of the far right.
