The legs are then worked to achieve the same possibilities of line and curve as the arms within the spatial sphere of the lower body. The legs are bent or straight in either standing or gesturing movements, and require clarity and control. Cunningham said, ‘… the arms are easy to move, so one doesn’t know how to hold them, whereas the effort to move the legs makes you concentrate on how to move them.’95
Every movement of the limbs (including the spine) is performed with the accompanying clarity of the support of the body in standing. An understanding of grounding and strength in supporting from the floor – the feet, the legs and the centre of gravity – is part of every exercise. Balance is very important in the technique (you can hear Cunningham talking about balance in a short video on the website: https://www.mercecunningham.org/the-work/cunningham-technique/).
