Chapter Ten

Dust and Ashes

“Alpha Khan,” Emil’s assistant began. He stood about two meters away from the Northern leader, clutching the edges of a tablet in a white-knuckled grip. Staring down at the screen, he read over the list he’d compiled for their morning briefing.

“The Leadership needs you to nominate new associates to replace the…victims. And we need to discuss the possibility of moving the annual gala from the hotel to a more suitable—”

Pressing a perfectly manicured finger to her lips, Emil shushed her assistant. He immediately stopped talking, but then again, of course he did; he was a Beta. Everyone knew Betas had no backbone, and this one had been trained into the perfect little sycophant.

Emil stared at her nervous assistant, waiting patiently to have his undivided attention.

He just stared back at her, blinking, confused. Eventually he got what he was missing and turned off his tablet. Clutching the device to his chest, he stayed perfectly still, waiting for Emil to speak.

The Alpha sat high above him at a desk situated on a raised platform. Her throne overlooked the entire floor where her staff sat in rows behind glowing computer screens.

The Northern Headquarters functioned like an automated factory. Accounts were taken, numbers calculated, and money made and spent a thousand times over.

Very little light slipped through the wide windows. The sun was blocked out by the building that towered across the street: The Faraji International Hotel. The sight of the gaping hole and the blackened windows was inescapable, despite the plastic coverings that had been placed over it. Those white sheets were blowing and shuttering against the wind, peeling off in some places.

A full twenty-four hours had passed, and almost every second of that day Emil had been staring at the dark pit as it appeared and disappeared behind fluttering plastic. And as she stared, she formulated her retaliation.

“Nominations will have to wait until after the gala,” Emil said, her voice low and sober. “And we’re not changing the venue. The upper floors may be damaged, but the hotel and ballroom facilities are in perfect condition. Our resilience will be a show of defiance.”

“Yes, Alpha,” her assistant said as he tried to be subtle in turning his tablet back on to type out this new information. “Should we…perhaps…increase security at the event?”

Emil leaned back in her chair. Her only response was an angry glower.

The original security detail was already excessive. Before the bombing, their intelligence had infiltrated talk online about mass protests scheduled for the day of the event. The Northern Empire’s Leadership and their most distinguished guests had requested armed security throughout the hotel in response.

Rolling her eyes, Emil looked from her cowering assistant back to her computer screen. In her newsfeed, the bombing was still the top story alongside opinion pieces and speculation around broken treaties and a gang war. However, an article in the gossip column below caught her eye.

Who is Dominik Wesa’s mysterious new Omega?

“Who indeed,” Emil muttered to herself as she took in the paparazzi snap that accompanied the article.
