Chapter 20

“I think it’s best if we put all our cards on the table,” Master Joryn said. “I get the feeling the three of you don’t trust me.”

“We’re being careful,” Dex said. “We had a few close calls on the trip down.”

“I’m surprised you found it at all,” the elderly Marshyl said. “Most treasure hunters don’t have the stomach to search through the darkness for the opening. And those that do don’t usually survive long. That speaks to the soundness of your training. I don’t know Ranger Saul well, but he’s an accomplished Marshyl. He has plenty to be proud of in you three.”

“What order were you?” Squirrel asked.

“I was an Ambassador for two decades, assigned to the king here in Lawrenshire. My main duty in that regard was to keep the knowledge of Laskis a well-guarded secret. I’m sure you know we have no shortage of enemies who would give anything to discover the wonders here. After that I spent several years studying to prepare me for my time here. We are the stewards of Laskis, including all her creatures, and guardian of the Sylykron.”

“What is the Sylykron?” Dex asked.

“Ahh, that is the ultimate question,” Master Joryn said, taking a sip of his tea. “It is the Essence, the Source, God’s Seed.”

“What god?” Squirrel asked.

“The God, the first and highest deity, the Supreme Being who created everything, including the gods themselves, as well as the stars, the moon, the world and all that is in it. Of course, that’s just conjecture, no one really knows where the Sylykron came from. Still, its power is beyond our understanding, and many people believe that all life in Dancyll sprang into being from the Sylykron. Certainly all magical beasts, and the magic we have dedicated our lives to studying comes from the Sylykron.”

“And it’s hidden here, in the cavern?” Squirrel asked.

“Yes,” Joryn said. “You three have now joined a very small company of Marshyls who know of this land and the secret it contains. Centuries ago, the first Marshyls hid the Sylykron here, after the Great War. Our Guild began to challenge the outlaw wizards and sorcerers who had bent the realm to their will. The armies of various kingdoms joined our fight, but still we were overwhelmed. Then the Sylykron was discovered, and the first Rangers crossed enemy lines and risked their lives to obtain it. Only three of nearly a dozen men sent to find the Sylykron returned, the others had made the ultimate sacrifice and none were unscathed, but with the source of all magic safely hidden away, the outcome of the Great War changed. The wizards and sorcerers turned against one another in their endless quest for power. The Marshyls and their supporting army were able to beat back their enemy and restore order to the realm.

“Fearing that we might simply take the place of the defeated sorcerers, our Guild was dispersed and the Mandate was formed. We would serve the realm, not just one kingdom, nor ourselves. Meanwhile, the Sylykron was at work.
