From the veranda, Biff Stone could see eleven-year-old Michael Prager standing next to the woman in the headscarf by the green station wagon. Stone turned and looked up at the swirling orb entity floating a few feet over his head.

“Well? You coming or not?” He asked. “The sooner we figure out what’s going on here, the sooner I can kill something and go home. I haven't had a drink or a cigar yet today and I’m too old for that kind of shit.”

The unblinking eye only stared back at him.

“If you follow me out, I’ll take that as yes.”

Stone walked down the steps, but the entity didn’t follow. Instead, it phased through the wall and went back inside the Victorian manor.

“Fine. Be that way. Asshole.”

Stone walked down the cobblestone path to where the station wagon was parked. It was a windy autumn day with a blanket of gray clouds covering the sky. Curled orange and brown leaves lay at the base of a huge sycamore tree that didn't exist on the other side. Some jackass had cut it down. Each gust of wind would lift a few leaves and send them floating toward the house or the street.

Stone stopped at the end of the cobblestone path. The woman in the green headscarf was securing a cooing infant in a front-facing booster seat. A little girl swaddled in pink with curly blond hair. There was a man sitting in the wagon’s driver’s seat, one hand resting on the steering wheel, while the other fiddled with the radio dials. He had short dark hair beneath a charcoal-colored baker boy hat. His face was obscured by a series of floating black scribble lines, as if his face were a drawing on paper that someone had tried to black out.

“Guessing you and your step-pop didn’t get on so well, huh?” Stone said to eleven-year-old Michael Prager. Prager didn’t respond. He had been absorbed by this plane of existence and lost the ability to see Stone. Stone kept looking at the scribbles blocking the stepfather’s visage. “Makes me wonder though... am I seeing him as you see him? Or as your monster sees him? Did you block out his face or did your monster do it for you?”

The woman turned from the baby girl and looked at Prager. “Mikey, are you sure a sleepover at your friend’s house is more important than a visit to your grandma’s? She doesn’t get to see you as much since we’ve moved out here.”

“I know, Mom, but it’s Jimmy’s birthday. He doesn’t have a lot of friends and I promised him weeks ago that I would be there.”

Stone smirked. “You little liar. Do you even have a friend named Jimmy?”

The woman smiled with pride. “He’s lucky to have a friend like you. When’s Jimmy’s mom coming by to pick you up?”

“She gets off work at five. I’m going to finish my homework and then maybe play some Atari until she gets here.”

The woman leaned down and gave Prager a kiss on the cheek.
