CHAPTER 20: THE ABBEY LONGRES

During the flight to France, Hattie explained to the boy what she had learned from her friend.

“William, I fear that you have been the victim of a great evil. Evil women have been preying on you and taking advantage of you. My friend, the nun, and her Superioress said that you are exhibiting all of the signs of a soul taking. It is a form of possession when a part of your spirit is taken from you by evil forces.”

William stared at her and slumped back into his airliner seat. For a moment, he simply listened to the dull roar of the jet engines, and then he said to Hattie, “I remember now – sort of. I sold it. I sold my soul to Professor Tatscheva.”

He broke down and began to sob quietly into the shoulder of his Aunt.

“There, there. We’re going to get you some help. My friend, through her Superioress, has helped me make arrangements for you. You and I are to be taken up by the Abbey Longres in France. It is the only place that can help us. We will have refuge there. I briefly spoke with the Abbess there and confirmed that. We will be safe once we are behind the walls of the Abbey. ”

The lad slept for the remainder of the flight. They arrived midday in France. A car from the Abbey was waiting for them at the airport and whisked them away to their safe harbor. The drive took six hours, and they arrived at the Abbey early in the evening.

At the Abbey, they were greeted by Sister Madeleine, the Abbess. She had spoken to Hattie earlier and had been notified of Hattie’s and William’s arrival at the airport that day. She had made sure that all proper preparations for their visit at the Abbey had been undertaken – including the procuring and provisioning of appropriate rooms on site.

She was a tall woman, who was late in her years, and was dressed in the traditional habit of a black tunic and cowl together with the white cap, bandeau and wimple. She was most dignified in her manner and spoke English without an accent. Hattie immediately introduced herself and then William. The Abbess greeted Hattie warmly and nodded her acknowledgement of William and led both of them to her office.

Her office was a dark place. Neither large nor small. But seemingly oppressive and far removed from the real world – the world of sun and light. She offered a seat to each of them in large armchairs around an impressive coffee table and then rang for tea and cakes. Both Hattie and William were famished. They had not eaten since the airport. They were most grateful for the food and drink.

“You are the woman with whom I spoke on the phone – on the international phone call?” the Abbess asked, looking at Hattie as she spoke.

“I am, Mother Superior,” Hattie responded.

“Then this is the young man of whom you spoke?” the nun further inquired as she gestured towards William.
