Jonathan saw Jasmine, Cade and the girls strolling along the sidewalk near the town green. Delighted to see the girls looking cute in jeans and matching fur-lined boots, he pulled into a parking space and got out. “Hey, where are you headed?”
Jasmine waved, making sure the girls all stopped when she did. Over the shrill calls of “Dr. Jon-Thon,” she said, “We’ve been taking a nature walk and now we’re headed back to the Cowboy Café. Arabella’s still there, working on plans for my wedding.” She pointed to the excited girls. “We were supposed to go home for naps, but these three decided they really wanted some of Kylie’s hot chocolate.”
“Yes. Hot chocolate!” Jessie shouted.
He met them on the sidewalk. “Hey, girls.” Then he shook Cade’s hand. “How’s it going?”
“Great. I’m on a lunch break.” Cade still shied away from a real discussion, but at least the distrustful scowl was gone. Jonathan hoped to talk about the future with the kid if Cade would just relax and listen.
“What you doing, Dr. Jon-Thon?” Julie asked, her brown eyes glistening with gold flecks. She held up several leaves in various shapes and colors for his inspection. “Look what I found.”
“I went to see a sick lady,” he said, taking a maple leaf to admire it. “Remember I had to skip lunch with you and your sisters?”
As in, when he’d made a hasty exit this morning and had avoided the house because of his strong feelings for Arabella. Sitting near her in church yesterday had only reinforced those erratic feelings. Had he only known the woman a few days? Did matters of the heart really happen this fast? Maybe it had been the combination of her clean-smelling perfume mixed with Reverend West’s message of being new again in Christ. Everything here seemed new and exciting lately.
“Did you give the lady stitches?” Jessie asked, one finger twirling a fat curl. “Did she cry?”
Jonathan wished it were that simple. “No, no stitches. She’s sick on the inside. It’s hard to fix.”
“Maybe she needs a blankie and a hug,” Jamie suggested, nodding.
Amazed that he was learning to translate four-year-old speak, he said, “I’m sure that would certainly help.”
He couldn’t say much more about Darlene Perry and her sweet daughter, Macy. But he did notice something interesting. All of Arabella’s girls had the same one dimple, just like their mother.
And so did Macy Perry.
The little girl had blond hair and blue eyes and the one dimple like Brooke, Arabella’s cousin. He hadn’t noticed the resemblance when he’d visited Darlene and her daughter the first time, but it came to mind now. Macy had come home from school today as he was leaving, so he’d had an up-close look at her features.
Darlene had told him how, at her behest, Brooke and Zach both took Macy under their wing and helped her prepare for what was to come. Then the frail woman had confided what an incredible blessing it was to have Brooke and her fiancé agree to adopt Macy as their own when Darlene could no longer care for her daughter.
