Chapter 10

We have a full house for breakfast on Saturday morning. As well as our house guests, a shed load of people have slept in the old stables, and there are even a few unknown and prone bodies on various benches in the gardens. Eunice Pomeroy and Sylvia take charge in the kitchen and get a production line of breakfasts running, and there is coffee - lots of coffee.

By 11 o'clock Sylvia and I are packed and ready to go off on our mini honeymoon. She looks stunning in a soft blue dress and jacket.

"You look enchanting, my dear," says George. "Positively radiant."

"Why thank you, George."

George inserts himself between us and links arms, leading us away to a secluded corner of the sitting room. "I never got around to giving you two your wedding present."

"We don't expect one, George," I say.

"Nonsense my boy. I have a villa in Italy, on the shores of Lake Garda. I'm heading out there mid July for six weeks, but the place is free throughout September, and you're more than welcome to it. It's rather splendid. I think you'll like it."

"Wow, George ... that's very kind of you."

"Is certainly is," says Sylvia. "Are you sure?"

"Absolutely." He smiles from ear to ear. "I hardly know you folks but I feel as though you're old friends. The weather won't be roasting hot but it will still be nice and warm, and the scenery out there is beautiful. Can you manage September?"

"Actually, it will be perfect for us." I glance at Sylvia and she nods her approval. "By then, Sylvia will have finished her book, and Bob will be able to take over my work here and keep things running. We'd talked about having a delayed honeymoon, so the timing is perfect."

"Excellent." He shakes my hand and then gives Sylvia a big kiss on the cheek. "You go and enjoy your Edinburgh break. I'll leave all the details of the villa for you, and I'll be in touch again when you return home."
