Chapter Fourteen
The sun had finally set and the lanterns had been lit for the night. Stars reflected off the water, but the moon was nowhere in sight. Alva decided that Elijah had been alone long enough. She would go to him, but if he started acting in any way that made her uncomfortable or afraid, she would leave him by himself for the night. She made her way down the hallway, opened his door quietly and crept inside.
As she had expected, it was dark in the room. There wasnât a single candle lit, and without any light seeping through the portholes, she had to feel her way across the room and ended up tripping over something on the floor. It was Elijahâs desk chair, left lying in pieces.
âAre you okay?â His voice was coming from the direction of the bed. His boots hit the floor and he started walking to her. âSorry.â He helped her up and stepped back.
âItâs fine.â She waited until her eyes adjusted before she reached for him, but he had already sat back down on the bed.
âHow is everything?â he asked. She knew what he meant without any further elaboration.
âEveryoneâs safe. From what the translators have said, our new guests are ready to get back home.â
âGood,â he said. âJames already informed me of our course.â She could barely make out the hand being extended to her. âCome here.â Alva stepped around the splinters of wood and sat beside him. He wrapped her in his arms. âWeâll be arriving in Africa in a few days. Cape Verde, to be exact.â
âCape Verde? Iâve never heard of it.â
âWell, thatâs fine, because youâll get to see it with your own eyes soon.â Elijah pressed a kiss to her temple and they lay back together.
âElijah?â
âYes?â
âI need to tell you something.â
âWhat is it?â His voice was laced with concern. âAre you all right?â
âIâm fine,â Alva said. âI just need to say this before I back out.â Elijah propped himself up on his elbow and looked down at her. âI-I donât know if I can do this. I promised myself that I would never need anyone, like actually need them. And now, I canât imagine an existence without you. Iâm sorry, but I need you, Elijah Maverick. Andâ¦I love you.â
âYouâ¦what?â Alva watched a myriad of emotions pass over his features in the dark and he bolted up and walked around the bed. âAre you serious?â
âIâm sorry,â she said quickly, fighting back tears. She had taken a chance and knew that there was a possibility of this reaction, but the rejection still felt like a knife to her chest. âI know this isnât the right time, and with everything else going on, here I am confessing to you. Iâm soââ
âAlva⦠Alva, stop.â Elijah leaned across the mattress and silenced her with a soft kiss, tangling his fingers in her wavy hair as he smiled against her lips. âYour timing could have been better, Iâll admit, but you have nothing to worry about,â he whispered as he tilted his head to kiss her again.
