Chapter Fourteen

Vincent was feeling even more uncomfortable by the second. All his vampire senses were going off, telling him the situation was not safe. He wanted to pick Tess up and carry her away to safety. But he fought those instincts. He sent a mental message to his guards to keep on the look out for anything unusual.

“Is that them?” Tess asked, peering out from behind Vincent’s tall form.

“Yes. I do not want you to talk to them. Let me do the talking.”

She frowned not understanding why, but she had to trust that he knew what he was doing. “Okay.” She looked at the two groups of men standing at the end of the forest waiting for them.

Vincent greets the humanoid first. “Lucas, where is Jerod?”

“He wasn’t able to make it,” Lucas answered without looking at Vincent’s eyes.

Vincent didn’t like the answer. How could the leader of the humanoids not bother to show up to a meeting he helped set up? Something wasn’t right. He looked over at the lycan leader. He didn’t bother to shake hands with Solan. He nodded in the other male’s direction. He growled when he noticed how Solan stared intently at Tess. He didn’t like that at all.

“Vincent, who is your friend?” Solan asked, keeping his eyes on Tess.

“No one for you to be concerned with,” Vincent answered harshly. “Let’s get this meeting started.”

Tess shivered from the intense looks of the lycan leader, Solan. She watched him cautiously out of the corner of her eye. He was big, with bulky muscles. He had long reddish brown hair and disturbing solid gold eyes. Those eyes undressed her where she stood and she wished she hadn’t insisted on coming along.

The humanoid leader called Lucas, she thought, was unimpressive. He too was bulky with muscles. He had dark brown hair and dark almost black eyes. He looked around shiftily, like he was hiding something. There were a couple of times she thought that Solan and Lucas gave each other secret looks, like they were on the same side. But that couldn’t be. From what Vincent had told her about the three rival groups, the humanoids hated the werewolves almost more than they feared the vampires. She was relieved when Solan finally turned his attention to the other leaders.

“Come this way.” Lucas led the group around an outcrop of trees and to where a compound was waiting.

Vincent was on guard. Why would Lucas, a human, expose their compound to their enemies so easily? And where was Jerod, the leader, in all this?

“I have a meeting room set up for us to discuss things. The female will be comfortable waiting in the kitchen area.”

“The female stays with me,” Vincent told him.

“Of course.” Lucas shrugged and continued inside the compound.

“What are you proposing?” Vincent asked.

Lucas spoke, using the plans that his former leader, Jerod, had once drawn up. Frankly, he didn’t care how the negotiations went. Vincent wasn’t going to make it out of there alive. “The three groups will agree to stop fighting one another and join forces against the Overseers.
