Chapter 6
Jody
âGood morning.â
Jody looked up at the sound of her bossâs voice and forced a smile. Suzanne was a nice woman, but Jody would bet every penny she owned she knew exactly what was on Suzanneâs mind and therefore what she was about to say.
I knew I should have just booked the day off. But the idea of bumming around at home doing fuck all on this particular day had seemed worse than being here.
Jodyâs body tensed. âHey.â
Suzanne, her glossy blonde hair held back in its usual ponytail, smiled and handed over a bunch of manifest forms. âI know itâs gone ten, but I need these processed by noon. Any chance you can do that?â
Jody blinked. Okay, so that wasnât what sheâd expected Suzanne to say. At all. âUm, sure. I mean, only if youâre happy for me to be a bit late on the September schedule updates.â
âTotally. These take precedent.â
Jody grabbed the forms and laid them down on her desk.
âThanks, Jody. Youâre a star.â Suzanne threw her another smile then strode away, leaving the sweet scent of her expensive perfume in her wake.
Jody breathed it in, then sat back. Her boss had surprised her, and in a good way. Respect.
A text message chimed on her phone. Sheila. Of course.
Hi, Jody. I know today is an important milestone. Iâm here if you need to talk. Sheila.
Jody sucked in a breath. Her therapist somehow always seemed to know just when Jody needed a little boost. She honestly didnât know how she would have got through the last few months without her. Despite the heavy significance of today, she was miles better than she had been six months previously, and Sheila had definitely helped to keep her afloat no matter what angry and emotional outbursts Jody had thrown at her.
Thanks. Doing okay. See you Thursday.
Message sent, she reached for her coffee mug but realised it was empty. Oh yeah, sheâd already finished her first cup of the day a while ago. Well, then, a second one was in order, especially as she would now be even busier for the morning than sheâd anticipated.
The coffee machine, one of those fancy Nespresso things, stood on top of a small, waist-high cupboard in the corner of the room. Jody knew the machines werenât brilliant for the environment, but given how easy they made making a cup of coffee, especially for someone with one arm, she wasnât going to complain. She opened the chamber where the pod would be inserted, then took a fresh one out of the jar Suzanne always kept stocked up. A couple of moves later and her coffee streamed into her mug. A splash of milk and she was all set.
Maybe, in a couple of months, when sheâd saved up a bit more, she could treat herself to one of these machines. The old-fashioned filter pot at home wasnât the easiest to work with. Sure, sheâd gradually got the hang of it in the twelve months since the accident, butâ¦
Just as she got back to her desk, the phone rang.
