Chapter Fifteen

“DO YOU want to go out to lunch?” Raine touched Way’s arm gently. “I’m at loose ends and…. You wanna?”

Raine worked the first floor, mainly doing laundry and running errands, from what Neal could see. These days Way was cleaning the second and third floor thoroughly, which Day insisted was a promotion.

Way thought they were trying to make his eyes bug out.

“Sure. Uh. Sure. You have an hour?” Dude, he had the free cash to go have lunch. Rock on!

Raine looked at his watch and frowned. “Forty-five minutes. That should be enough time if we go to one of the trucks by the park, right? It’s a nice day.”

“Sure.” He nodded to Day and Jude on the way out the door. “We’re getting lunch. Do you want anything?”

“Jude has us covered, but thank you, Way, that’s very sweet of you.” Day gave him a warm smile.

They were good guys—happy and all-around decent people. “You can call me on Neal’s phone if you change your minds.”

Jude shook his head, sliding one hand over Day’s where it rested on the counter. “I take care of all of Master Day’s needs.” Jude looked at Day like he’d hung the moon.

Raine opened the door, eyes seeming sad as he did. “Come on, Way. I have forty minutes, now.”

He had to trot to keep up with Raine. “Hey, is something wrong?”

“Huh? Oh, they’re so fucking happy. It’s not fair, and I’m super jealous. It’s so hard, you know? There are so many of us and so few of them that you have to be gorgeous to even get a notice.”

Way blinked a few times, the bitterness coming as a surprise. It didn’t seem like Raine at all.

“Oh, come on. You have to see it, even though you have one of your own. I mean, you’ve got the hair, the pretty. I’m just… plain.”

“You aren’t plain, Raine.” Way meant the words too. “You’re prettier than I am. I’m just… me.” There did seem to be a lot of couples at the gym. But he knew not everyone was hooked up.

“Thanks. I’m just… I came on to one of the members, and… well, let’s say that it went badly. He sort of patted me on the head and gave me the ‘run along now, puppy’ thing.” Raine rolled his eyes. “So demoralizing.”

Way wanted to give Raine a hug, but they were outside and they weren’t even boyfriends, and he didn’t know what to do to make him feel better. “I… I’m sorry.”

“Me too.” Raine grinned at him, the expression a little sheepish. “Sorry, man. I didn’t mean to make you wigged. I just wanted to vent. I’ll be good.”

“Oh, that’s okay. You surprised me.”

There were a half-dozen food trucks by the park, and Raine craned his head. “Which one do you want to eat at?”

“You want falafels? I love those.”

“Sure. Sure, I like the creamy dip. The stuff from chickpeas.”

“Hummus.” They went to the Tabuleh Tabuleh truck and got in line.

“So how are you?” Raine asked, looking a little sheepish again.
