Chapter 8

It was difficult to find a place to park at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, but once they did, Cooper took Charlotte's hand and led her the few blocks to Robinson Street to a tiny Greek restaurant. After a delicious meal that combined the flavors of honey, lamb and cinnamon, they strolled back to the museum and spent several hours meandering through the exhibits.

Charlotte fixed salads with fresh vegetables and leftover chicken for their dinner and they discussed what they had seen, marveling over great pieces like the Faberge eggs and laughing over other exhibits.

"What about tomorrow?" Charlotte asked Cooper as they cleaned off the table.

"I guess I should stay at my place tonight. I didn't bring a lot over with me and we might not need to go in at the same time. Maybe we should stay apart during the week." He leaned back against the counter, his hands gripping the edge.

Charlotte kept her eyes on what she was doing in the sink. "That's probably a good idea, although…"

"What?"

"It's going to seem lonesome around here without you. This has been the most unexpected, wonderful weekend." Cooper took her in his arms and forced her to look at him.

"It's going to be lonesome for me, too. I like sleeping with you. I like waking up with you. I really like all the things we do in between." She smiled.

"This has been a good weekend for me, too. And not just because of the sex. I've had fun." He considered what to say next. "Look, I've been thinking. Maybe we should spend more time together." He brushed her hair back from her face, looking intently at her. "I think I might like to live with you."

At Charlotte's startled look he rushed on. "I know you have a plan, and I realize you seem to think it doesn't involve me except at the beginning. I'm telling you now that I'm going to try to change your mind about that. But I don't want to entangle you in something that could complicate things even further for you. You let me know what you want, when you want it." He kissed her sweetly on both cheeks. "I know this. James Clarkson doesn't deserve one hair on your head, much less anything else you want to give him." He held up his hand as she started to speak. "I know him and his reputation, Charlotte. I'm very afraid you're going to get hurt."

Charlotte was silent. "Maybe you're right and it would be best for us to stay at our own places during the week. But Cooper, I appreciate your concern. I do. It's just that, I have to follow my heart." He nodded.

"I have my doubts, but I understand. I'll bring the muffins tomorrow. Meet at my desk at eight?" He dropped his arms and stepped away from her.

She wrapped her arms around her waist as though cold, suddenly. "Yes, that sounds great. Thanks for everything this weekend. Do you want me to drive you?"

"Thank you for everything this weekend.
