Father Sixtus gave Ashlynn the address and a picture of Byron Danvers, a fifteen year old boy who would be her first case. She studied the photo. The young man looked like the average teenage boy. He was standing in front of a small brick bungalow with a slanted smile. He was dressed in a white polo and black pants and holding a sign that said, “First Day of High School.” His eyes, bright and warm, exuded innocence.

“I don’t see anything in him,” she said.

“This picture was taken before the trouble started. Don’t make up your mind before you setup a meeting.”

”When should I go to see him?”

”Immediately,” Father Sixtus said.

She put the pictures in her pocket told Father Sixtus to send her the address, and left. Ashlynn was home by 2 AM that morning. She wasn’t sure what to make up the meeting. Dealing with demons was a bit more than she’d hoped for. What if the people she met with were truly possessed? How would she deal with an actual possession?

The next morning Ashlynn called Candace Danvers during her prep hour and made an appointment for that evening.

“You can come anytime before 11:00 tonight. I work midnights and have to leave at that time.” Candace told her.

”I will be there at six tonight.”

A heavy, sigh filled the phone.

”Thank you so much. We need you.”

That evening Ashlynn packed a rosary, crucifix, Bible, and the small container of holy water she kept in the bureau drawer by her bed. Bruno and Rex watched as she slipped the items in a bag. Both dogs let out little moans as they watched her.

”Don’t worry. I’ll be back soon,” she told them.

Bruno barked once and Rex ran off to hide underneath her bed.

”I hope you two don’t know something I don’t,” Ashlynn said.

The Danvers lived three blocks from her. She pulled down the dead-end street and parked in front of the bungalow from the picture.

“God, please be with me,” Ashlynn muttered before getting out of the car. As she reached for the doorbell, the front door flew open.

“It’s about time! We’ve been waiting for weeks! Thank you for coming.”

Ashlynn smiled, but she was feeling a lightheaded. Father Sixtus had sent her the Danver’s address that morning. She wanted to take a few days to digest the task she was undertaking, but Father Sixtus urged her to act immediately. Now she was officially on her first assignment. What exactly she was doing? When she asked Father Sixtus, there’d been a long pause. Eventually, he said, “I think you’ll know.

That wasn’t comforting. Ashlyn didn’t know what possession would look like, or what she should do if she encountered a possessed person. How could she tell the difference between possession and mental illness or physical illness? She didn’t feel suited for this, but she had been praying for months for something that would make her service to the world more meaningful. Now she was standing on a porch two blocks from her home, with her hands shoved in her pocket.
