CHAPTER THIRTEEN

IRIS

some call me impractical

The coffee shop was apparently the place to be on a Sunday morning. Since Sadie and I had arrived and snagged a table in the corner, it seemed like nearly every person in the county had come through its front door.

One of my favorite pastimes was people watching, and this shop delivered. It was going to be my new Sunday morning ritual.

In the past hour, Sadie had asked me question after question about becoming an influencer. And as we’d talked, as I’d shared in her palpable excitement, I’d fallen a bit in love with this girl.

Her curiosity reminded me of my own. She was genuine and kind. Every time someone would wander over to our table to tell her hello, she’d stand up and either shake their hand or give them a hug. She had a quick wit I suspected was lost on most of her high school classmates.

No wonder she was Wilder’s favorite student.

I’d told him about meeting her at the shop yesterday and asked if he had concerns with me mentoring her. He’d thought there wouldn’t be much harm in a couple of meetings at the coffee shop, especially since she didn’t need to know I was sleeping with her science teacher.

Phew. It would have sucked to cancel on Sadie. She’d come armed with a spiral-bound notebook and a list of topics to discuss.

“I love the photo you posted today,” she said. “But those are not the same shoes.”

“Nope.” I laughed, glancing down at my Golden Goose crystal-embellished sneakers. They were on the conservative end of the spectrum compared to the shoes I’d been wearing in today’s post.

The picture Kim had posted today was of me on the dirt road to Wilder’s house. My back was to the camera and my shoes, a pair of Louboutin Mary Jane platform pumps, were the focal point. The red soles were a stark contrast to the blues, golds and greens of the landscape. They were entirely impractical for the rugged scenery, exactly as Kim had captioned.

“Only about a third of the pictures and videos I take are posted on the same day,” I told Sadie. “Most of my content is scheduled and coordinated by my social media manager. I definitely recommend scheduling posts so you can get ahead.”

“Ah. That makes sense.” She nodded. “If becoming an influencer doesn’t work out, then social media manager sounds like my backup dream job.”

“There are a ton of opportunities out there with influencers. I’d be happy to connect you with my business manager so you can use her as a reference. She’s always got a line on people who are hiring.”

Sadie’s jaw dropped. “For real?”

“For real.”

“That would be amazing.” She pressed a hand to her heart. “Thank you.”

“Welcome.” She’d have to self-motivate and hustle, but I had a feeling that wouldn’t be a problem. “What are your plans after you graduate? Besides your social media stuff?”

She groaned. “I don’t know yet. Everyone has their next year figured out except me.”

“There’s no law that says you have to decide right away.
