Two weeks went by, uneventful but for classes. Instructor Ford informed me the King had meetings and our sessions were postponed until otherwise noted. I couldn’t help but worry the King had spoken with his son and was freezing me out. I hated the constant nauseousness that now resided in my stomach.
I’d forced my fight with Iris out of my head, throwing myself into my studies. I didn’t wanting to believe her story, not only because it would mean she used me, but it could mean I’d been wrong, so wrong, about KEY and my King.
I’d never wanted so badly to be right about something, though when I considered it, it wasn’t about my ego; it was about not wanting to see the horrors my kingdom had to endure if what Iris said was true. I’d heard the King’s side, of rebels who did dastardly things because they didn’t trust their King. But that was his side of the story, and if Instructor Ford’s Media classes taught me anything, it was to have an objective point of view. To think of things from the rebels’ side … I didn’t want to imagine the King tearing down cities and cultures, or killing rebels and anyone thought to be helping them. Just because we’re different. It was too frightening to consider.
All the same, I hated the ache in my chest at Iris’s absence. Mealtimes with friends felt lackluster. My stupid heart missed her, and I’d spent the last few days wondering if I should at least try and talk to her. I had no idea what I’d say, or how it would go, but I hated how I’d left things between us. Every time I remembered the hurt look on her face, a flash of guilt would swoop in my belly. I hadn’t seen her since our argument, but I wanted to at least try to talk to her. I’d finished my last class of the day when I bumped into her roommate, whose name I’d forgotten.
“Hey Reina," she greeted me.
“Hi,” I said. “Say, have you seen Iris today? I need to talk to her.”
She shot me a puzzled look. “Iris? Haven’t you heard?”
Hair fell around my face when I shook my head.
“She left, like a week ago. The King found her a match and encouraged her to go out and visit his family.”
She left. The words echoed over and over in my head, daring to break my heart into a million pieces. A tidal wave of emotion hit me, but I somehow maintained composure in front of her roommate.
“No, I hadn’t heard. Are you sure?”
She nodded, sympathy crossing her pretty face. “I’m sorry, I know you two were good friends.”
I almost scoffed, holding back at the last second in case it looked odd. I went through the full gamut of emotions within a span of perhaps thirty seconds. At first, I couldn’t believe it. Didn’t want to believe it. How could she run off and be with some guy? This was
