Chapter 19: Olivia
âWhatâs wrong with you? You look like you should be in the ward of The Anderson Clinic.â Amelia says when I slunk into her office.
I feel worse than I look, especially because I was yanked out of bed at ten in the morning by her call. I sink into a chair and say a silent prayer that I donât vomit all over my editorâs table.
âA little bird confirmed to me that youâre seeing Jace Anderson,â she says, leaning over her desk.
I groan internally. Not that again. I was sure that I had thrown her off. âItâs nothing serious,â I say, too hungover to try and convince her otherwise. Besides, calling me to her office means that sheâs pretty sure of what sheâs saying.
Her eyes gleam. âAre you serious? I donât care what youâre doing together as long as youâre together. This is Jace Anderson weâre talking about. The CEO of Anderson clinic. If anyone has the dirt, itâs him.â
Itâs my turn to look at Amelia like sheâs insane. âHeâs the last person thatâs going to give me any dirt on the clinic. Besides, Iâm starting to wonder if there is any dirt. They seem to be very open in how they run itâ¦â my voice trails off at the look of disgust that comes over Ameliaâs features.
âAre you falling for him?â she asks.
âNo,â I say as firmly as I can.
She stares at me without speaking for a few long seconds. âDo you remember asking me to give you this assignment and youâll prove to me that you can do it?â
I nod stiffly. I had a lot of conviction that day but I hadnât reckoned on falling for Jace Anderson.
âDonât make me regret trusting a novice. If I had gone with our more experienced journalists, they would not be sitting here telling me that the clinic has no dirt and itâs run very professionally. You sound like theyâre PR department,â she says scornfully.
I donât blame her for being angry. I was given a job and now Iâve gotten myself into a situation of conflict between my work and my feelings for my boss. If Amelia knew how bad it was, she would fire me on the spot.
âInâ¦â she looks at the calendar hanging on her wall, âone month and three weeks, Iâll expect to see and read the work youâve been doing at the clinic.â
âTheyâre working on having a free day clinic,â I blurt out and the moment the words are out, I want to kick myself. Why did I say that? Jace hasnât confirmed it. Heâs still trying to figure out how it would work.
Amelia beams. âThatâs good. Give us more snippets like that. Talk to you soon.â
***
I spend the whole weekend recovering and by Monday, Iâm back to myself. I go to the office earlier than usual and Iâm in before Jace. I enter his office and arrange his desk. We usually have cleaners in but they donât touch the papers on his deck.
His scent is everywhere and it makes me ache for him.
