Chapter Seven

With such a lovely outdoor space and increasingly balmy weather, it became difficult to stay inside. Belita began carrying great stacks of books out to the terrace overlooking the garden, where the two of them also took their supper. She even commissioned a new swinging wooden bench from the carpenter in town, who had never built such a thing but gamely followed the blueprint Belita presented from the castle’s library. She sewed the pillows for the seat herself, stuffing them with hay and waxing the inner layer of the fabric to prevent water rot. Tonight, the bench swayed slowly in the wind. Belita’s eyes followed it from her seat at the table, her gaze occasionally shifting to her dining companion. They had lost weight, their ribs and hips more visible under their graying fur than they used to be. Belita was slightly alarmed by the pace at which the beast seemed to be aging. For so much to have changed in less than a year…

“Why did you agree to come here in your father’s stead?”

Belita twitched as the question interrupted a long stretch of peaceful silence. “He’s my father,” she replied slowly. “Anyone else would have done the same.”

Impenetrable black eyes gazed at her. Belita sighed, glimpses of that horrible day flashing in her mind. After nearly a month away, her father had returned from his investigation into the missing fleet of ships. Hearing the horses, Belita had run to greet him, slowing as she noticed the mix of terror and grief on his face.
