TWENTY-EIGHT

Blake can’t keep his smirk off, and I can’t stop glaring at him in return. The growl around me keeps going, and I’m just confused at this point because he doesn’t even open his mouth, so who in the world is doing it?

My little kitten . . .

My body tenses up, and a shiver runs through my back as I swallow a lump, not recognizing the voice in my mind. Definitely not my subconscious nor Panthera.

In fact, Panthera is in shock as well. The voice is deep and almost seems old like a thirty-five-year-old deep voice. It’s kind of raspy too. It’s not terrible though.

Don’t tease me, I hear him say.

I frown. Well, what the hell does he want?

My cat snarls, I’m not teasing anybody.

He laughs, and I have to be honest: it’s a sexy laugh. My cheeks heat up, and I can feel how flustered Panthera is getting.

I completely tuned out everything that has been happening around me. Blinking a couple of times, I glance up at Theo who’s watching me with an unreadable expression. I give him a small smile.

“You spaced out,” he simply states.

I nod. “Yeah, sorry. Inner problems,” I explain without saying too many details, but luckily Theo gets what I mean.

“Lucky. I rarely talk to mine,” Theo says, looking disappointed, but his expression is different than usual. He feels . . . distant.

I lean my head on his shoulder, looking at Bella and Jessica, whispering to each other. “She recently started talking to me, so just give him time. It’ll happen sooner or later,” I say, hearing him sigh.

“I hope so,” he says, kissing my forehead once again.

See, you’re teasing me, the voice from earlier says growling.

Don’t be ridiculous, Panthera snaps back, and I finally put two and two together.

My heart stops.

It’s Blake’s wolf.

But how can he do that?

I look at Blake with the corner of my eyes. He looks confused as hell. He can probably hear Panthera’s snappy replies.

I’m just warning you that if his lips—

You’re one to talk. You let that human kiss you, so don’t even bother with me, my cat snarls, and I can feel her anger rising at this point.

Yes, because you kissed him yesterday!

So you thought that bringing that human back was a good idea?! How fucking stupid are you?!

The wolf laughs bitterly. I, at least, had the balls to break things off when I found out about you!

I abruptly stand up, excusing myself and bolt out of the cafeteria. I can hear the animals fighting, so I pull out my earphones and plug it in my phone, picking the first random song my eyes see. Their voices fade away, and I release a sigh of relief.

My cat’s mood is merging with mine, and I don’t want it. I lean my back against the wall a few feet away from the cafeteria, and my body slides down until I’m sitting on the floor.

I close my eyes and sigh. I can still hear them bickering even with music blasting through my ears.
