Chapter Seven
Emma couldnât shake the smile on her lips as she entered her office. While sheâd needed the time off, she wanted to get back now that she no longer felt sick.
The reason was obvious. Thresh. After spending all night in his bed, she finally felt like herself again. Sheâd left that morning even as heâd tempted her to stay longer. Heâd stretched, showing off each hard line of his body, a smirk on his lips. The bastard knew what he did to her.
One word and she would have stayed. One rumbled demand and sheâd have crawled back into that bed for as long as he wanted. When sheâd asked why he hadnât ordered her to stay, heâd lifted an eyebrow as if surprised she didnât understand.
âI give you what you need, but I do not force you out of my own wants. That would be selfish. I want you to stay, but you do not need to. I give you choices in what you do so long as they donât risk your well-being. You are my partner and my mate, not my slave.â Heâd caught her wrist and pulled her closer to steal a kiss, his fingers teasing over her bare side. When he broke the kiss, she was a panting mess, and his smirk said he knew it. âI always wish for you to stay, but you have a life, and I swore I would not stop it.â
Walking out had taken more self-discipline than sheâd thought she possessed. The warmth of the bed, of his skin, had her wanting nothing more than to crawl back in with him.
But she did have a life. Sheâd missed three calls from her boss and avoiding him any longer wouldnât go well.
Inside his office, her boss, Edward Franklin, sat behind a desk too large for the space, a tie meant to look expensive at his throat. Heâd always been too slimy for her liking.
Where Emma had ethics on what she would and would not do, Edward would do anything for a story, pushing his reporters to do the same. Theyâd butted heads in the past over articles, over lines she wouldnât cross. The only reason she still had a job was that when she did find a story, few did it better.
âAbout time.â His gaze didnât lift, hand reaching for a manila folder. âClose the door.â
Emma shut them in and took the seat across from him. âWhat is this about?â
He opened the folder, turned it toward her, then pushed it across the desk.
Emma leaned forward to look at the picture, expecting a lead on some story he hadnât been able to track down on his own. He often would hit a wall and come to her.
Instead, a picture of her in Threshâs lap at the bar that first night stared up at her.
She jerked her gaze up. âYou were spying on me?â
âSpying? No. Trust me, youâre not interesting enough to spy on. A contact was there that night and figured a Kantr would be a good story.
