Chapter 11: Sidney Day 2

We march and trudge and walk. Or at least I do. The soldiers march while the zombies move ahead. All of them, even Sam and the telepaths seem to move faster than the rest of us can. Every so often the zombies will stop and wait for us to catch up. I wish we had vehicles, but the number of troops we brought made it impossible. It makes me question how we’ll possibly get around though, because not all of the aliens are nearby and the last thing I want to do is get back on the plane and risk our lives or my mental and physical health.

It takes us several hours but we finally catch up to the aliens. As we get nearer to them I feel this pressure building up in my head. The two aliens together have this visible field of psychic energy around them. They’re intent on feeding on a bunch of cows and they don’t even notice us approach but the power they exude makes me want to stay away from them.

The telepathic zombies come together and a moment later the pressure I’m feeling lifts. Both of the aliens start and turn toward us. When they see us, their response is immediate. The energy field they are emanating becomes much stronger and that sense of pressure comes back along with the whispering sensation. I can feel them trying to get into my head and I’m not the only one experiencing the sensation. Everyone that’s not a zombie is halted in their tracks, frozen by whatever the aliens are doing.

The whispers in my head start urging me to attack Sam and the zombies. I have a pistol with me and my right hand starts going for it. I grab at my right hand with my left hand, trying to stop it, but my right hand keeps inching toward the gun. I look around and I see the soldiers in a similar battle, and in some cases it looks like they’re failing. One points his gun at a cannibal zombie and shoots. The head of the zombie turns into dust. Another soldier points his gun at a fellow soldier and shoots him in the head. The only one of us who doesn’t seem to be affected is Mulford, and of course the zombies. Mulford calmly walks over to Garret who is struggling with his own sidearm.

“Looks like you’re having some trouble commander.”

“Wh-why aren’t you effected?”

“That’s a good question. Could be because I’m a zombie of some sorts, but nah that really isn’t it.”

Mulford casually pulls the pistol out of Garret’s hand and fits into his own.

“Wh-what are you d-doing?” Garret gasps.

“I don’t want you killing yourself Garret. I want that privilege for myself. I was promised it actually,” Mulford sneers.

“Wh-who?!”

“Michelle.”

The look on Garret’s face when Mulford says that is one of utter devastation and heart break.

“I know you’re wondering why and the truth is simple: This alliance with the zombies is wrong. They’re meant to die fighting the aliens.
