“The people of the village have started cutting down the trees in the forest at the bottom of this mountain,” the dragon said.

“But the forest goes for many miles,” replied Grandad. “There are many more trees.”

The dragon held up a claw, then in a sad voice, told them his story. “You wonder why no one has seen a dragon? I am the last of my kind. Hundreds of years ago, there were many of us. We lived on this mountain, and the other mountains around here. Many years ago, there was no village. All this land, for as far as you can see, was ours. Dragons could fly and roam free. We had no enemies. The stories you may have been told of dragons, knights in shining armour and fighting are not true. They are just stories.”

“So, why are you scaring the villagers? Why are you burning their fields?” asked the little boy.

“They are cutting down the trees; I told you. The trees of the forest are sacred to me. When there were many of us, the forest was where our young played and grew and became strong, and now the villagers are cutting it down.

“If they carry on cutting it down, I will burn their village. I have never fought man before, but if they come looking for me, then I will fight.”

Grandad looked up at the dragon, then said, “We can tell your story to the villagers, tell them about the forest, explain what it means to you, and get them to stop chopping down the trees. If they stop, will you leave them alone? If they agree to get their wood from the forest on the other side of the fields, will that be okay?”
