Chapter 17

W

hen I opened my eyes, I was in my bed with a sweet-smelling aroma floating about the air. My eyes fluttered and my muscles ached. Even moving my head made me feel like my body was being torn right from left. Though blurry, I made out the stone on my table. Like a small light within a dark tunnel, its glimmer was reflected within my eyes.

Upon closer inspection, it was a very beautiful rock. Black like a fine onyx gem. When I held it before, it was soft to the touch. It was shaped like a small egg and gleamed beneath the candlelight in my room.

Speaking of my quarters, I also noticed it was dark. Only the light of the candle on my study desk illuminated my room. I felt weak and I felt thirsty. I noticed the familiar pitcher of water on the floor next to my chair at the table. I slowly reached out my hand and urged for the water within it to obey my will.

All I could do was watch in silent shock as the water within it remained perfectly still. As I stared at the pitcher, a familiar feeling of dread washed over me like ice.

I had lost my powers once again.

I couldn’t even feel the creatures swimming beneath the crashing tides. Just like before my death, the seas had forsaken me once again.

Although I felt the opposite, I found myself rather calm. Despite the pain, I chuckled. Aye, a pirate captain forsaken by his crew, forsaken by the sea, and forsaken by the very fate which drove him forward. There was humor to be found in the odd tragedy. That said, I figured it was possible that my abilities would return. They had returned before… I think.

When I died, I did not have my powers when I drowned. Yet, I woke up in my body of nineteen years with the same abilities I had not held yet in the previous time. So if I had them now, as opposed to that time, then it should stand to reason that they would return. However, Liara stated that I had been dead for a number of years before my rebirth. What if it took that long for my powers to come back?

I closed my eyes and turned my head back up to face the ceiling. Aye, I was definitely going to fuck over one of the Fates for this. This was the second time I had experienced this odd separation between myself and my abilities. That said, perhaps this was the first time I was properly digesting the information. The power which I used to claim my throne was gone.

I heard the turn of my doorknob. I turned my head to see who would come in. I supposed that since I had just been sleeping earlier it wouldn’t be much of a surprise if someone knocked and I didn’t answer. I’d forgo the knock on the door needing my permission just this once.

The door slowly opened and I noticed Aesteal’s pretty little head poke through.
